Lastly, keep in mind, by "dirt jumper" and "trails bike", I mean these are for those purposes & not really a "mountain bike" sort of ride. If you were to look at flatland BMX complete bikes, their head angles are not designed for stability (as trails bike frames are), rather they are more "twitchy" due to the sort of riding they were designed to do (see below): And, getting a frame that will fit him is harder in that area too since most BMX bikes have a top tube of 20.25 & above (at least more serious frames). If he's going to be doing more of a dirt jumper/trails sort of thing, there are frames designed with that in mind but they look pretty much identical to other BMX bikes designed for street riding (tricks). We don't know how old he is (to gauge expected growth) or what sort of riding he'll be looking to do in the future. It's really hard to tell you which direction to go. There are some deals to be had in the used market but it gets harder to know what you are buying without some education. If you were looking for something smaller, you'd probably be into an 18" wheeled bike (but he might outgrow that in a couple years) or you could look at a "flatland freestyle" bike/frame as they tend to be smaller in size. but there are exception and it is a subjective thing). On the lower end of BMX bikes (Beginner) you could go with:įrom there, the top tube sizes, which is how BMX frames are "sized", generally get bigger (the taller you are, in general, the longer the top tube. at this stage, it doesn't sound like he's getting too crazy but who knows about the future?! I mean, he is a boy, after all. However, it depends on what sort of riding he will really be doing.

Most people here would advise a bike with a full chromoly frame, fork, handlebars, cranks, etc. That's an interesting situation you are in. I'd really appreciate any advice that you can offer. The Banshee was absolutely worth every penny. I'm willing to spend a lot for the right complete bike, so long as he doesn't outgrow it by the end of the summer, but I don't want to throw away money if it isn't going to make a difference in the quality of the bike. I understand it isn't going to be under 15 pounds like the Banshee, but am struggling to find something in the same weight ballpark (& a lot of the manufacturer sites don't list weight at all). (He actually takes remarkably good care of his bike, I just don't want something that isn't built for him to play on it.)ĭoes anyone know of a complete BMX bike (probably 20" wheels and I am guessing a top tube of around 18, but really don't know) that will stand up to just a boy beating it up having fun *and* is relatively lightweight. I like the simplicity of BMX race bike sizing, which would put him on a junior, but he doesn't race - I don't see that in our future and I worry that I'd be replacing a lot of rims for no reason as he hops over curbs, etc. I have been researching BMX bikes inside out and am now admitting I am lost. I think a BMX makes sense - he rides on dirt, mud, gravel, pavement. Not having gears also makes him just get stronger to do what he wants to do. This is a kid who likes to do the pump track and hop around, doing simple tricks on his bike.

The Banshee has been great - bulletproof and lightweight, but if we were to go Spawn again the size charts put him in the 24" bikes that have suspension, derailers, etc and are over $1000. We have had a bunch of nice 60 degree days, so I'd rather not wait that long. They are saying to wait until closer to May. We've tried going to a bunch of LBSs, but no one locally has had them in stock (adult sizes only). (He's been on that bike riding since it was too big and happily keeps going, even though it is now too small.) He's 51 inches tall with a 22.5 inch inseam - it is just time.

He is still riding his Spawn Banshee, which has been a great bike. I'd really appreciate any help you could offer on picking my son's next bike.
